This is 3 day event starting Friday the 13th  - Sunday the 15th of December 2019.   This is a 5 round Classical Tournament (FIDE rated) and is open to both adult and junior players.

The tournament is open to anyone including adults, juniors, members/non-members of the Swieqi Chess Club.  However since these are FIDE rated events you will have to be listed with a Chess Federation.

As the name suggests those losing at each round will be eliminated from the competition. However, those who lose their first match will be given another chance by playing in a consolation event. Here are the details.

​

The maximum number of players that can take part are 24 players on a first come first served basis. The format of the preliminary round and seedings will depend on the number of players entering. For example, if 24 players take part, the top 8 players shall be seeded. The remaining 16 players will play a Preliminary round. The 8 winners will join the 8 seeded players to enter the main knockout competition. The losing 8 players will take part in the Consolation knockout event. Both events will then run in parallel until a winner in each is determined. The overall winner shall be the winner of the main event while the Consolation knockout event will produce a Consolation knockout winner.

Each round will consist of 2 rapid games of 15 mins + 5 sec with each player playing once with white pieces and once with black pieces. If there is no winner, one game of blitz will be held where white will have 3mins + 2sec while black will have 2mins + 2sec. White will pass to the next round with a win and Black will pass to the next round with a draw or win.
