Newcomers Classical
The newcomers event proved to be very successful with 11 players playing, out of which 8 were playing their first classical event. The event was won with a perfect score by Wayne Vella. Benjamin Chetcuti Cauchi took second place whilst George Borg Mercieca, took third place on tie-break having the better of Samuel Spiteri.
It is worth mentioning that George Borg Mercieca was the second youngest player participating at the age of 7 years. Nikol Borg was the youngest at the age of six years old.
Also worth mentioning all other participants who took this important step in their chess career: Matthias Borda, Emerson Mercieca, Daniel Gatt, Kate Shephard, Benjamin Calleja Falzon and Samuel Sciberras.
Open Event
The Open tournament was won by Onurcan Pala, who won the event with full points. Onurcan, a Swieqi Chess Club member, played very good games and deserved to win the event.
Second and third place were awarded, based on tie-breaks, by Jacob Zammit and by Vince Kosik respectively, on 3 points. Matthias Gatt also placed joint second but took overall fourth due to tie-breaks. It is good to note that Vince Kosik played only three games in the event and skipped the games on Sunday, winning all three games and still getting a podium finish. This was a great performance by this young player.
Other prizes included, Best Junior won by Gabriel Gauci, and Best U1500 player going to John McKellar.
