"The Check Mates", consisting of Kenny Fong, Dusan Djokic and Isaac Grima Bongailas, were declared the first winners of the SCC Rapid Team series held at the Swieqi Chess Club. The idea is establish this as a regular event held twice a year, with the winning team fighting for the SCC Rapid Team shield where winners' names will be engraved and hung at the club.
It was a very strong event with a good mix of players being fielded in 13 teams, and it was up to the last game to establish the winning team, as four teams were up in top 4 with just one match point difference.
The Check Mates won the event by winning 4 games, drawing 2 and suffering no match loses. Close joint second came two teams, and by tie-break second place was taken by "Serving Kann", with a team composition of ex-Malta Champion Jake Darmanin, Aaron Cordina and Claude Licari. Third place on tie-break went for "The Rook", who recovered very well finishing the event with three consecutive match wins. The team line-up of "The Rook" was, Italian strong player Federico Rosin (2142), Ella Miceli-Farrugia and Martina Portelli.
Very interesting was to see the fight for board prizes. Very contended was the board one, with an average rating of 1886 and three 2000 players. Best board one went to Jake Darmanin, with a perfect score.
Best board two was also very well fought with prize going to Jacob Zammit. Best board three on the other hand went to WFM Filipina Thornton, scoring 5 points out of 6.
