Tristan Nagle and Matthew Portelli win SCC Juniors January 2026 Edition

In January the Swieqi Chess Club restarted its usual monthly Junior Rapids, with the first tournaments of the year being held on 28th January. The two usual events, the Under 12s and the third Secondary Arenas were organised.
Under 12 Event
Around 20 young players played the Under 12s, with representatives from various schools. Four players finished joint 1st with 4 points. Tristan Nagle, won the event by tie break, followed by Rushil Pattar on second and Nikol Borg who took 3rd place. Worth noting that Ozgun Oszoy also scored 4 points but missed top 3 places on tie-breaks.

Leo Nagle - Best Under 8

4th Secondary Arena
The fourth event of the Secondary Arena attracted twenty-six players and well over 10 schools represented.
Matthew Portelli (St Theresa Secondry School Mriehel) won the event with a perfect score, including a win against a strong 2100 Polish player who was visiting Malta. Second place, was taken by the same Polish player Witold Kowalski and third place going to Francesco Catania who had a very good tournmaent.
