Catania and Gauci win SCC Juniors December 2025 Edition

The monthly Swieqi Chess Club Junior Rapids held on 20th December with the two usual events, the Under 12s and the third Secondary Arenas.

Under 12 Event


23 young players played the Under 12s, with representatives from over 15 different schools. Francesco Catania, won the event with full points, whilst three players tied on 4 points. On tie breaks, Hangchang Wang took took 2nd place, whilst Nikol Borg took 3rd place. Worth noting that Miles Dalli Poole also scored 4 points but missed top 3 places on tie-breaks.

Other category prizes were rewarded:

  • Alfredo Bonaci - Best Unrated

  • Ana Refalo - Best Female

  • Ozgun Oszay - Best Under 10

  • Nikolai Kardalev - Best Under 8

3rd Secondary Arena


The third event of the Secondary Arena attracted over twenty players and 11 schools represented.


Gabriel Gauci (De La Salle) won the event by dropping only half a point - this is Gabriel's second win from this Secondary Arena series. Second place, was taken by Zachary Briffa on tie-break with the third place going to Mikhail Gusarov.


Other category prizes were rewarded:

  • John Refalo - Best Under 14

  • Tristan Scicluna - Best Under 12

  • Thomas Ellul - Best Unrated

The Swieqi Chess Club is also keeping track of the accumulative scores of all players over the series of the Secondary Arena for 2025/26 (6 events in total). There will be a prize for the overall winner. Below you can see the current top 10 standings of these accumulative scores.
