Dexter Toth and John Refalo win SCC Juniors April 2026 Edition

On the 25th April the Swieqi Chess Club held the usual monthly Junior Rapids, with an overall participation of 50 players in the usual two event format, the Under 12s in the morning and the Under 20s in the afternoon.

Under 12 Event


Twenty nine young players played the Under 12s, with representatives from various schools. The sole winner, with full points, was club member Dexter Toth. Three players got four points and shared the second place, but on tie-break Ozgon Ozsoy took the second place trophy, and Tristan Nagle took third. Nathan Farrugia was the other player on 4 points, but finished fourth on tie-break. As for the category prizes, Cheng Shu took the Best Under 10, and Leo Nagle took the Best Under 8. These prizes were introduced recently to encourage younger players.

Under 20 Event


Twenty one players took part in the Under 20 event, with a very strong lineup of top seeds.


John Refalo (San Anton) won the event with a perfect score which is a great achievement in such a strong event. Second place, was taken by Zachary Briffa. A long list of five players scored four points, but on tie-break, third place went to Benjamin Calleja Falzon who had a very good tournmaent. The category winners were Matthew Callus as Best Unrated, Haoxan Shan as Best Under 12, Dante Pace as Best Under 16, and Isabella Eileen Lucica as Best Female.
