Refalo and Briffa win SCC Juniors November 2025 Edition

The monthly Swieqi Chess Club Junior Rapids held on 19th November with the two usual events, the Under 12s and the second Secondary Arenas.

Under 12 Event

A nive turnout of 30 young players played the Under 12s, which turned out to be well fought for the top places. John Refalo, who usually plays the Secondary arena but was playing European Amateur Championship in the afternoon, dominated the event with full points. Three players tied on 4 points, but on tie breaks, Nikol Borg took 2nd place, whilst Francesco Catania took 3rd.

Other category prizes rewarded included the Best Under 10 won by Ozgun Oszay, and Best Under 8 won by Leo Nagle.

2nd Secondary Arena

The second event of the Secondary Arena attracyed by twenty two players. Zachary Briffa, starting as the 5th seed, won the event by dropping only half a point. Second place, was taken by Matthias Board and third place went to the October winner Gabriel Gauci. Other category prizes rewarded included the Best Under 14 won by Jack Cutajar Forte, Best Under 12 won by Rushil Pattar and Best Unrated won by Matthew Callus.
